Sailboat racing between New York and San Francisco began in the mid-19th century, during the California Gold Rush.
The first sailing ships to compete on this route were clippers, fast vessels designed to transport passengers and goods as quickly as possible.
One of the first and most famous sailing ships to cover this distance was the Flying Cloud, which set a record in 1851 by sailing from New York to San Francisco in 89 days, 21 hours.
