Cette course mythique, surnommée « la transat de la Liberté », était ouverte à tous types de bateaux, sans distinction de classe ni de taille. Trente-huit concurrents ont pris le départ le 5 novembre 1978. Elle a été remportée par Mike Birch sur son trimaran Olympus Photo, avec seulement 98 secondes d'avance sur Michel Malinovsky et son monocoque Kriter V.
Un événement marquant : la disparition tragique d'Alain Colas et de son trimaran Manureva au large des Açores, onze jours après le départ.

This legendary race, nicknamed “the Transat of Freedom”, was open to all types of boats, regardless of class or size. Thirty‑eight competitors set off on November 5, 1978. It was won by Mike Birch on his trimaran Olympus Photo, with only a 98‑second lead over Michel Malinovsky and his monohull Kriter V.
A defining event: the tragic disappearance of Alain Colas and his trimaran Manureva off the Azores, eleven days after the start.
