The crossing returns. On April 24, 1916, the James Caird left Elephant Island for South Georgia with six men aboard: Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley, Tom Crean, Harry McNish, Timothy McCarthy, and John Vincent. Their small boat set out across roughly 800 nautical miles of the Southern Ocean in search of rescue. Exactly 111 years later, on April 24, 2027, our Pipits will gather at the same island and point their bows toward South Georgia once again. One of the great UCD adventures is coming back. A tiny boat. A vast Southern Ocean. And a crossing that has become something very special to this club. This time, GPS will be allowed — but the challenge comes with one absolute rule: 100% ONLINE SAILING Every mile must be sailed online. From the moment we leave Elephant Island until we reach South Georgia, we have to be there with our boats. No offline miles. No shortcuts. Just us, our Pipits, the weather, and the Southern Ocean. PRIZES 1st — 200 Bubbles 2nd — 200 Bubbles 3rd — 200 Bubbles It is a route we know. A story we know. And by now, these cold southern waters almost feel like home. 111 years later, our brave little boats are going south again. =) Elephant Island → South Georgia April 24, 2027
