A tribute to James Caird, the Ernest Shackleton's legend boat. The UCD 04 Pipit is a classic and deliberately simple boat, created as a technological and conceptual comparison to the original James Caird. Rather than recreating the historical hull line by line, the Pipit (Named after the Pipit - Anthus antarcticus -, a resilient seabird of open and often harsh landscapes), explores what that idea could become with slightly optimized geometry, while still respecting the spirit of early 20th-century small-boat design. The hull is long but not narrow, with a clearly classical profile. Unlike the original boat, this design features a shallower stern and a fuller bow, resulting in a more directional, purposeful, and slightly more aggressive form, better adapted to sustained progress in strong conditions. The sail plan is intentionally very simple, no reefing system and reduced complexity to minimal adjustments. The sails are designed to be strong, forgiving, and reliable in heavy wind. This is a boat that favors structural honesty and efficiency over versatility. It is meant to be sailed as it is — trimmed carefully, trusted fully, and respected. The UCD 04 Pipit is not about speed records or modern comfort. It is about simplicity, endurance and seamanship. A humble and capable boat. A tribute to one of the greatest small-boat journeys ever made. ____ Join the James Caird Tribute Race on April 24 ____ Join the UCDs Club: https://discord.gg/Z2y66fd6Gs ______ Photographs by Frank Hurley, map adapted from the original of Ian Cameron. |
