A skûtsje (pronounced 'skootshuh') is a Frisian sailing boat of the type tjalk or Dutch barge,

originally an ordinary cargo boat, but today a prized ship and one of the icons of Frisia.

Skûtsjes were built from the 18th century until about 1930.

Skûtsjes are 12 to 20 m (39 ft 4+1⁄2 in to 65 ft 7+3⁄8 in) long.

Skûtsjes on average are 3.5 m (11 ft 5+3⁄4 in) wide, with a maximum of 4 m (13 ft 1+1⁄2 in)

(based on the standard dimensions of Frisian bridges and locks).

In the 1920s and 1930s, many skûtsjes were fitted with engines.

After World War II the sails were often removed.

Nevertheless, other, much larger, powered boats took over water transportation in the area.

Many Skûtsjes then were rebuilt into houseboats or luxurious sailing yachts.

Over time, more and more were restored to their original state.

There is a yearly racing event in Friesland called Skûtsjesilen.

Such races were already held in the early 19th century.

Since 1945 races have been regulated through a committee, SKS.

In these races, each Skûtsje represents a city or village.

In 1981 another organization, IFKS, also started organizing races.

This racing already started early in the 20th century,

when villages in Friesland or more precisely often the bar and hotel owners,

made prizes available for the winner.

At that time the skipper and his family lived on board in a narrow cabin and before the race,

family and interior were placed ashore to make the boat as light as possible.

Skûtsje Bolle is not meant for racing ! Separate Skûtsjes will be created (without interior and other items to make for responsive gameplay without latencies.. ) See Skûtsje created by Sailaway creator JumpingJems.

Known Issues

Gaff is not lowered or raised.
Main sail is not attached to gaff
Top leech of sail cannot be shaped along gaff (round)
Hardware detaches from interactive part, when interactive part rotates (mast)
Hardware cannot be attached to sail corners (straps, shackles, blocks etc)
Interactive Parts cannot be manipulated through attached lines etc.
Pitching is off.
Parts are not assigned materials (yet), (winches, forward butterfly hatch)
The Stern cabin interior is (still) missing.
Fo'c'sle interior is (still) missing (the hell hole)
Anchoring mechanics ar not implemented (yet)
Mooring mechanics are not implement (yet)
JIb cannot be reefed (yet) by rolling up bottom leach
Mast laying issues (Mast only allows rotating around vertical axis, implemented workaround may break with future updates)
Interactive parts are activated on mouse over, with 36 + interactive parts, parts are activated unintentionally all the time.
Fluegel requires animation, so it can show wind direction and strength. (Was submitted as animated part not added to hardware library yet)
Cabin light shines 180 ° sector (work around: set as 360° anchor light may show correct behavior, but would mean turning light on by switching anchor light)
Reefing lines are not functional.
Sails (still) have default textures
Swing wheel on winches needs spokes
Winch is not animated (yet, workaround: Default brass winches have been installed horizontally inside the winches.. When turning, the handle will protrude through parts.)

NB list of issues should get smaller approaching November 7th :)
